Adults will pay K25,000
Children will pay K10,000

February
2010 - Update
This month has seen
the arrival of several primates confiscated from the illegal pet
trade. The efforts from the Lunga Luswishi Wildlife Project have
brought 1 baboon and 6 vervet monkeys to the Sanctuary. They are
undergoing their health checks and will be starting their
integration programme in the next month.
We also had a visit from Dr
Stephen van der Spuy, CEO from Johannesburg Zoo, he came as
representative from the African Zoo Association (PAZAAB). The
purpose of his visit was to see what Munda Wanga is like at the
moment. He will give feedback to the Executive Committee from
PAZAAB whether Munda Wanga can join PAZAAB as an institution,
after that we can prepare for the operational standards
inspection, followed by a full accreditation. So we still have a
long way to go, but slowly we are getting there.
The rains have been heavy
this February, so visitor numbers have been low, luckily the
weather is picking up again and we are in for a great March.
January
2010 - Update
A new year, lots of
new things are going to happen.
We are looking back at a fantastic year in 2009, over 50,000
visitors past the gates at Munda Wanga. The second best year
since the Munda Wanga Trust took over the management of the
Park. The ratio adults Children is now 31/69. This is great to
see as we are managing to educate even more children on the need
to conserve their natural environment.
The down side of the story
is that the budget is being strained even further with this
ratio, children simply do not pay as much as adults do. So more
children through the gate doesn't always mean more money to
improve the park, let alone pay the bills.
The coming year will see
more cultural and music events, more new arrivals of animals,
more new developments and even more other surprises. So keep an
eye on the website and email.
3 September
2009 - Presidential Monkeys
Munda Wanga Wildlife
Sanctuary has received 63 of the total 200+ Vervet monkeys that
are resident at State House. The others will follow as soon as
the gardeners at State House can capture them.
For more information please see the
press release.

the international press.
31 July 2009 - EXPECTED ANIMALS:
Cape Vultures and many more! Read the
new
arrivals section of which animals are new at the Sanctuary.
24 March 2009 - Happy goodbye:
You must have heard the stories about some baboons
running around on Cairo road. These baboons had arrived with the
wheat train at the NMC complex. Here they jumped out and
startled the staff. Munda Wanga was called to the rescue and all
but one were captured in about 2 weeks of hunting them down
along Cairo road.
It has been several months now, and they have bonded with some
other chacma baboons that have come in during the last few
months.
Because these baboons had been in captivity for only a short
period of time, it was decided that they should be released as
soon as possible. Since the rains are almost over and the roads
are accessible again, their final journey is to commence in the
coming few weeks.
They will be transported to one of the Islands in Lake Kariba,
where no people live and no agricultural activities are taking
place. This will provide them with a perfect place to live
without terrorising communities and raiding crops. On the other
hand they will be safe from predators and can live happily ever
after.
Another successful release to the wild!
February 2009 - Sad goodbye:
Our oldest Lioness has passed away. Emma, had been at Munda
Wanga for the last 10 years. She was brought to Munda Wanga
after the Kitwe zoo had to close down. On the a trailer she
toured the country giving many of the police officers at the
road blocks a fright. They had never seen a lion and all wanted
to see her. However time was ticking as she was sedated for only
a few hours.
After several years she had two cubs Thelma and Louise, two
fully grown lionesses who are still enjoying their vast
enclosure.
Emma has reached the age of 20 years old. Very old for a lioness,
in the wild the average age is not more than 10years.
She will be sadly missed, but will enjoy the eternal hunting
grounds, without fences to keep her in.

NEW ARRIVALS
In the coming
months Munda Wanga Wildlife Park and Sanctuary is expecting
several new animals. Keep a close eye on this site so you will
be the first to come and see them.
African
Wild Dog
(July 2009)
They had been long
awaited, but finally they have arrived today, 6 African Wild
Dogs. They have traveled from the Ann van Dyk Cheetah Centre -
De Wildt to Munda Wanga Sanctuary. They will be housed in the
enclosure next to the lions. It is very special to be able to
see these animals as they are not very often seen in the bush.
The Munda Wanga Trust would like to thank the sponsors who have
made this possible:
- The Ann van Dyk Cheetah Centre - De Wildt for donating the
dogs and delivering them to the airport;
- MMA - consolidated agents, for clearing and handling the dogs
at JNB.
- South African Airways - for the 50% discount on the flight to
Lusaka.

naming the dogs.

Ostriches
(February 2009)
Two ostriches joined
the collection at Munda Wanga in February, these two young
Ostriches are happily running around in their new environment.
They illustrate the education lessons on birds and the variety
of birds that are around in our natural environment.

Donkeys (January 2009)
Recently we received two new donkeys, the one walked on to a
farm in Leopards hill. The owner of the farm took him in, but
soon found that he would be better of in a different place.
Munda Wanga matched him with a female from another farm and they
are now the first animals in the petting zoo.

Jackals (December 2008)
Two jackal puppies were found by the ZAWA officers in Mansa,
they contacted Munda Wanga to collect them in order to raise
them and give them a protected home in Munda Wanga. Read more on
this story in the latest Munda Wanga Magazine.
